About

Located in Windsor, Ontario, on the U.S. & Canadian border, the partners and staff of AM Associates have spent the majority of their careers assisting personal and corporate clients with their taxation and financial statement needs. As classically-trained Canadian CPAs, the firm carries a basic client roster of Canadian personal and corporate tax clients. That said, our differentiating value to clients  and the professional services industry at large, lies in our ability to assist with planning and compliance for tax situations that span the U.S. & Canadian border. With our ability to offer a holistic approach to your personal and corporate tax structure, AM Associates offers a range of services, from consultations with existing service providers to coordinate planning and delivery, to completion of the compliance services in-house. Whether you are a professional in need of client support, or an individual or corporation  with a complicated tax structure, our tax professionals are here to help.

  • U.S. + Canadian Personal Tax Planning and Compliance

At its core, AM Associates is focused on the individuals who ultimately bear the tax burden. Whether it be the simple preparation of tax returns for a Canadian or American employee, or more complicated scenarios involving U.S. persons, rental properties, sole proprietors business statements, corporate ownership, or tax residency concerns, we can help ensure that compliance needs are met with the taxpayer in mind.

  • Trust and Estate Planning

The death of a taxpayer creates a variety of steps required to close out an estate. Our goal at AM Associates is to ensure that there are no tax surprises on death, and we work closely with clients to ensure that their affairs are understood in the event of an untimely passing. This is particularly important with cross-border assets, as the use of wills, powers of attorney and medical powers of attorney gains in importance when more than one country is involved. While the use of trusts has diminished over the past 20 years, they are still quite useful in many situations, which we can assist in identifying.

  • Tax Appeals and Litigation Support

As governments around the world become increasingly sophisticated in their audit and review approaches, it is essential that review and audit requests are dealt with quickly and professionally. AM Associates has significant experience dealing with audit requests on both sides of the border, and can assist in clearing up previous re-assessments made in error, either via amendments to the tax returns in question, or objecting to the amounts in question. We also work closely with lawyers to provide litigation support in the rare situation where a tax dispute is elevated to that level.

  • Cross Border Tax Structures

The majority of our practice involves structuring or restructuring cross-border arrangements to ensure that tax planning goals are achieved. With a specific focus on U.S. persons owning Canadian corporations, and expansion by Canadian or U.S. companies into the other country, AM Associates can offer expert advice, and often act to coordinate between the U.S. and Canadian accounting and legal teams to ensure that the business is avoiding the many pitfalls of operating in a cross-border environment. From a personal tax standpoint, this often involves the use of legal vehicles for real estate ventures, and the contemplation of trusts for end-of-life tax planning.

  • Financial Statement Preparation

As a functional CPA firm, AM Associates prepares financial statements across a span of industries, for a wide-variety of needs. Whether it be a simple Compilation engagement, or more complicated Review or Audit engagements, AM Associates can support your business in the great majority of settings.

  • Corporate, Trust, and Partnership Tax Compliance

Beyond the planning, AM Associates provides compliance services for any type of tax structure in Canada or the U.S. We work with a variety of CPA firms, lawyers and financial planners on both sides of the border, in situations where the tax planning and structures are in place, to ensure that the appropriate tax forms are correctly and timely filed to meet the overall plan’s requirements.
